Leaked emails from the recently unsealed "Epstein Files" suggest that British taxpayers’ money was used to provide security for Jeffrey Epstein’s private residence.
The revelations, first detailed in February 2026, allege that Metropolitan Police protection officers assigned to the then-Prince Andrew were instructed to guard Epstein’s New York townhouse and other properties during his visits.
Documents unsealed by the US Department of Justice include correspondence from 2010 and 2011—a period during which Andrew previously claimed to have severed ties with the convicted sex offender. The emails appear to show:
Logistical Requests: Requests from Andrew’s office for his Metropolitan Police Personal Protection Officers (PPOs) to be stationed at Epstein’s properties to "ensure security" during social visits.
"Check-ups": Allegations that Andrew asked his protection team to carry out background checks on individuals within Epstein’s circle, including Virginia Giuffre.
Shared Intelligence: Suggestions that the officers were used to vet visitors to Epstein’s homes while Andrew was present, effectively using elite British police as a private security detail for an American felon.
The Metropolitan Police Response
In a formal statement issued on 20 February 2026, Scotland Yard confirmed it is now identifying and contacting every former and serving officer who worked on Andrew’s protection detail between 2001 and 2011.
The Met has asked these officers to "consider carefully whether anything they saw or heard" during their service is relevant to the ongoing criminal review. While no officers have been charged with wrongdoing, the force is investigating whether the misuse of police resources constitutes a breach of professional standards or criminal misconduct in public office.
Political Fallout
The news has sparked fury in Westminster, with Home Office sources describing the allegations as "unacceptable."
Public Funding: Critics have pointed out that while the public was told the PPOs were there to protect a member of the Royal Family, they were allegedly being utilised to shield the activities of a convicted paedophile.
National Coordination: The National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) has formed a dedicated task force to oversee the investigation, which now spans eight different British police forces looking into the UK links of the Epstein network.
