Prison Terms for Former Plumpton Students in "Stomach-Churning" Sheep Attack

The legal saga that has cast a long shadow over the East Sussex agricultural community concluded today, Monday, 23 February 2026, as Leighton Ashby and Oakley Hollands were handed custodial sentences at Hove Crown Court.

In a courtroom filled with local farmers and animal welfare advocates, Judge Jeremy Gold KC delivered a scathing verdict, sentencing both men for the brutal killing of a sheep at Ditchling Beacon in November 2023.

The Verdict
The judge described the actions of the two men as "a betrayal of the very vocation they were studying." After considering the "gratuitous" nature of the violence and the use of explosives on a live animal, the court ordered the following:

Leighton Ashby (22): Sentenced to 2 years and 8 months in a Young Offender Institution.

Oakley Hollands (20): Sentenced to 2 years and 4 months in a Young Offender Institution.

Lifetime Ban: Both men have been handed a lifetime disqualification from owning, keeping, or being in the presence of any farm animals.

"No Room for Leniency"
Despite pleas from the defence citing the youths' "immaturity" and "remorse," Judge Gold remained unmoved. He highlighted the video evidence found on Hollands’ phone, noting that the "chilling laughter" heard during the animal's suffering proved the act was premeditated and for the defendants' "twisted entertainment."

The judge also praised the bravery of the two student witnesses who came forward, stating that their actions preserved the integrity of the agricultural community and ensured that "sadism was not mistaken for student high-jinks."

Community Reaction
Outside the court, representatives from the RSPCA and local farming unions expressed relief at the custodial terms. A spokesperson for the Sussex farming community stated:

"This isn't just about one sheep; it's about the safety of our livestock and the standards we expect from those who wish to work with animals. Today, the law sent a clear message that cruelty has consequences."
