Iran’s Supreme Leader Killed as US and Israel Launch Second Wave of Strikes

The Middle East has been plunged into an unprecedented state of total war today following the confirmed death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a joint US-Israeli air strike. As of Sunday afternoon, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) have announced a "second wave" of intensive bombardments targeting the heart of Tehran, while Iran has responded with massive missile salvos across the region.

The Death of the Supreme Leader
Iranian state media confirmed early this morning that Khamenei, 86, was killed alongside his top security advisors and members of his family during a "precision strike" on his office in Tehran on Saturday.

In a statement from the White House, President Donald Trump described the military operation—codenamed "Lion's Roar"—as "going very well," adding that the goal is "regime change" and calling on the Iranian people to "take back their country."

Indiscriminate Retaliation: UK Bases at Risk
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) has vowed "crushing revenge," launching what it calls Operation Honest Promise 4. This has already seen hundreds of drones and ballistic missiles fired at:

Israel: Major interceptions reported over Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

The Gulf States: Explosions have rocked Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi. Drone debris reportedly ignited a fire on the facade of the iconic Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai.

Cyprus: UK Defence Secretary John Healey confirmed that two Iranian missiles were intercepted near British sovereign bases in Cyprus (RAF Akrotiri). Healey described the situation as "serious and deteriorating," though he stated Britain "played no part" in the initial strikes on Iran.

Global Chaos and Travel Shutdown
The conflict has triggered the most severe disruption to global aviation since the pandemic.

Airspace Closures: Skies over Iran, Iraq, Jordan, and most of the Gulf remain closed to civilian traffic.

Flight Cancellations: Thousands of flights between Europe and Asia have been cancelled or diverted. Etihad Airways has suspended all departures from Abu Dhabi, and Dubai International—the world's busiest hub—remains effectively shuttered.

Oil Markets: Crude prices are expected to spike by over 10% tomorrow as Iran threatens to block the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for 20% of the world’s oil.

"This is a regime lashing out in an increasingly indiscriminate and widespread way," Healey told Sky News this morning. "We are taking down drones that menace our bases, our people, or our allies."
