The University of West London (UWL) hosted the fourth annual Black in Biomedical Undergraduate Conference this month, aiming to ‘reframe the picture’ and increase representation in medical research.

The conference was held on Wednesday 4th March in collaboration with SiSTEM UK and sponsored by The Academy of Medical Sciences and MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences (LMS).

Championing representation in biomedical science

Black in Biomed is a network of like-minded individuals seeking to raise aspirations and change the narrative of Black students in Biomedical Science. The conference was founded in 2023 by UWL’s Professor of Biomedical Sciences Bernadine Idowu to inform and equip Black students with first-hand knowledge and insight from those further in their journey.

The theme of this year’s event was ‘Reframing the Picture’ highlighting the importance of representation within medical research, particularly in areas such as clinical trials, where Black communities are often underrepresented.

Keynotes, mentoring and conversations shaping future careers

The conference consisted of a welcome speech from Professor Idowu, a keynote by Dr Donald Palmer of the Royal Veterinary College, a panel discussion, a speed mentoring workshop, and opportunities for networking.

Biomedical Science student Soriver Veloz said: “I’m especially grateful to the panel for sharing their journeys and how they got to where they are today. Their insights showed that there are many ways to navigate the field and take advantage of the opportunities it offers. It was also inspiring to see the importance of representation and diversity in STEM, and the impact that people of colour continue to have within the field.”

Biomedical Science student Elizabeth Feleye commented: “It meant a lot to see professionals who look like me thriving in research, industry and clinical roles. It reminded me that there is space for us in these fields, even when it doesn’t always feel that way. I’m especially grateful for the opportunity to network and meet many new people, ask questions and gain insight into different career pathways after biomed. Thank you to the organisers for creating such a valuable and empowering space!”

Professor Bernadine Idowu said: “The success of the 4th Black in Biomedical Science Conference was evident not only in the excellent attendance but also in the energy and enthusiasm throughout the day. It was inspiring to see many first-time attendees engaging, networking and building new connections. The continued conversations and engagement on LinkedIn show that the impact of the conference extends far beyond the room.”
