The warning, issued via the MetEngage platform by Sergeant Bob Swallow, highlights that many incidents involve thieves on mopeds or bicycles approaching victims from behind to grab valuables.
‘‘These incidents often happen quickly and can be very upsetting,’’ Sgt Swallow said. ‘‘Our aim is to help prevent further offences and keep our community feeling confident and safe.’’
In response to the spike, police are fast-tracking CCTV reviews to identify suspects and working closely with local businesses to improve safety messaging. Residents are being urged to ‘stay aware and stay connected’ while navigating busy areas.
How to stay safe on Hounslow’s streets
Police have shared four key steps to reduce the risk of becoming a target:
- Hide your valuables: Avoid using your phone while walking. If you must check it, step into a shop or stand with your back against a wall.
- Secure your bags: Wear cross-body bags with the strap across your chest and keep zips closed and positioned in front of you.
- Watch the kerb: Many snatches are carried out by riders on mopeds. Stand further back from the road when waiting at crossings.
- Look out for others: Stay alert for suspicious behaviour around friends, family, and more vulnerable residents.
