Tributes have been paid from across the political spectrum following the death of Councillor Jagdish Sharma MBE at the age of 91. A trailblazing figure who served the London Borough of Hounslow for 51 years, Cllr Sharma was the borough's first Asian mayor and a former council leader, remembered by colleagues as a devoted mentor and a ‘pioneer’ for the British Asian community.

Councillor Shantanu Rajawat, Leader of Hounslow Council, described him as a deeply cherished member of the community whose half-century of service transformed countless lives.

Cllr Rajawat said: ‘‘It is with great sadness that today we learnt of the passing of Councillor Jagdish Sharma MBE at the age of 91, after a long and brave battle with cancer.

‘‘Jagdish, or Uncle Sharma as I called him, was a devoted public servant, a pioneering leader, and a deeply cherished member of our community. His remarkable 51 years of service to the London Borough of Hounslow transformed the lives of countless residents and helped shape the borough we are proud to call home.

‘‘Jagdish was among the early generation of Asian migrants to the UK - individuals who worked tirelessly to build new lives while strengthening the foundations of community and belonging. His dedication to supporting others, particularly new families settling in Hounslow, earned him profound respect and affection. First elected in 1974, he broke barriers throughout his career - becoming the first Asian Mayor of Hounslow in 1979 and later serving as deputy leader and leader of Hounslow Council. A passionate advocate for social justice, education, opportunity, and inclusion, he championed young people and ensured their voices had a place in leadership. Indeed, he was one of my mentors who encouraged me and many of my generation to run for council in 2010 for the pursuit of public service.

‘‘His impact was not limited to the council chamber. He was a mentor, a guide, and a trusted friend to many, including my own family. His kindness, wisdom, and encouragement shaped my life personally and inspired a new generation of aspiring public servants.

‘‘We also remember his beloved wife, the late Urmilla Sharma, whose unwavering support was central to his success. Their partnership stood as a shining example of love, resilience, and shared purpose.

‘‘Jagdish leaves behind an extraordinary legacy - one defined by service, compassion, and community. His contribution to Hounslow will be remembered with gratitude and pride for many years to come.

‘‘We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time, and may his memory continue to inspire us.’’

Councillor Peter Thompson, Leader of the Conservative Group, also paid his respects, noting that serving for 50 years is an ‘extraordinary achievement’.

He said: “I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Cllr Jagdish Sharma. Serving the people of Hounslow for around 50 years is an extraordinary achievement, and one that speaks to a lifetime of dedication to public service.

‘‘I have known Jagdish since 1998, and throughout that time he was always friendly, respectful, and committed to the role he served. I felt genuinely privileged to be invited to speak at his 50th anniversary event just two years ago, which was a fitting reflection of the contribution he made to this borough.

‘‘Jagdish was a central figure in Hounslow for decades, including his time as leader of the opposition between 2006 and 2010, when I was serving as leader of the council. We sat on opposite sides during that period, but I always respected the seriousness with which he approached the role and the strength of his commitment to his residents in Hounslow.

‘‘Public service for Jagdish went far beyond politics. His career in education, rising from teacher to deputy head and then Headteacher, showed the same sense of duty and care for others. As someone who also works in leadership in education, I know the difference that kind of leadership makes to young people and to the wider community.

‘‘Those of us in local government understand the personal commitment it takes to serve over such a long period. Jagdish gave that, consistently and with conviction, for half a century.

‘‘On behalf of the Conservative Group, I extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all those who knew and worked with him. He will be remembered for his long service, his dedication, and his contribution to the life of our borough.”
