LONDON — Today, Sunday 5 April 2026, the retail world is reeling from the news that Waitrose has sacked a veteran employee of 17 years for intervening during a shoplifting incident.

Walker Smith, a 54-year-old shop assistant at the Clapham Junction branch in South London, has described himself as "devastated" and "demoralised" after being dismissed following a brief physical scuffle with a repeat offender.

1. The Incident: A Struggle for Lindt Gold Bunnies

The confrontation occurred in the lead-up to the Easter weekend. Mr Smith was alerted by a customer to a man filling a Waitrose bag with luxury Lindt Gold Bunny Easter eggs, which retail for £13 each.

2. "Nothing We Sell is Worth Risking Lives For"

Despite his 17 years of service, Waitrose upheld its strict "no-confrontation" policy. A spokesperson for the supermarket told The Guardian:

"We take the safety and security of our customers and our partners incredibly seriously... Nothing we sell is worth risking lives for. As a responsible employer, we never want to be in a position where we are notifying families of a tragedy because someone tried to stop a theft."

3. A Rise in Retail Crime

The sacking comes at a flashpoint for UK retail. Figures show that shoplifting offences in England and Wales rose to over 519,000 in the year to September 2025.

Mr Smith claims that security at his branch had been scaled back, leaving staff on the "frontline." He told the Evening Standard that he had witnessed shoplifting "every hour of every day for the last five years" and simply reached a breaking point.
