Chancellor Rachel Reeves is under mounting pressure this week following the explosive revelation that the state-backed National Savings and Investments (NS&I) has "lost track" of nearly £500 million in customer deposits.
The scandal, which broke in late March 2026, has already seen the NS&I Chief Executive, Dax Harkins, forced from his post as the Treasury scrambles to handle what is being described as the biggest failure in the institution’s 160-year history.
1. The Treasury Knew in December
While the public only learned of the scale of the "missing" funds recently, sources have confirmed that NS&I officials briefed Treasury ministers—including the Chancellor’s team—as early as December 2025.
The Failure: An "operational failure" in the bank’s tracing systems meant that approximately 37,500 people—mostly bereaved families—were unable to access accounts belonging to deceased loved ones.
The "Black Hole": The trapped funds total an estimated £470 million, with some families waiting over six years to recover life savings.
2. "Staggering Failure of Oversight"
Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride has led the charge against Reeves, questioning how the Treasury allowed the mismanagement to spiral while taxpayers are now potentially on the hook for a massive compensation bill.
In a scathing statement to The Telegraph, Stride said:"Hard-working taxpayers could be asked to pick up the bill for what appears to be a staggering failure of oversight. The idea that £400m of taxpayers' cash may now be needed to put right years of mismanagement is deeply alarming. Serious questions must be answered, and fast, about who knew what and when."
3. The Government's ResponsePensions Minister Torsten Bell addressed the House of Commons on 26 March 2026, confirming that the government has "parachuted in" Jim Harra (former HMRC head) to lead an emergency review. Bell insisted the "full truth" would be revealed within three months.Despite the controversy, the Treasury has reiterated that all NS&I savings remain "100% safe" and are fully guaranteed by the government.
